Megan McKean and Agnieszka Zoltowski are the artists behind ORU – two makers who weave together their individual styles and techniques to skillfully craft the work you find here. Megan studied Graphic Design at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, while Agnieszka learned Metalsmithing at Oregon College of Art and Craft. They became co-workers at a jewelry company in 2013 and quickly realized that magic happens when they create together. They gradually combined their individual styles and found a light-filled workshop in Portland, Oregon where they began designing and fabricating their first collection. Varied, yet complementary, experiences in jewelry design and production are the foundation for their original and modern work. The creation of each piece combines love of color with an energetic design process and meditative weaving, producing jewelry that is elegant and refined, always with a hint of playfulness.
ORU is the Japanese word for "to weave,” and each piece of jewelry we craft exemplifies the art of weaving. We weave Japanese glass beads together to create a delicate beaded fabric. We also integrate materials, combining the beaded fabric with a metal body. Most importantly, the aesthetic of two very different designers is woven together to craft these timeless pieces. We believe that weaving these various elements of design together to create a connected whole is the essence of what makes our work special.
